FAQ's
What is a Miniature American Shepherd?
Below are links to help you get to know the Miniature American Shepherd. We always encourage puppy buyers to research the breed as much as possible!
How Are Our Puppies Raised?
Our primary goal is to raise well-socialized puppies who have a foundation that enables them to do anything. We specifically focus on introducing them to a variety of people both in our house and through short excursions. Our puppies also meet other animals including dogs, cats, and livestock. Below are some FAQ's about how our puppies are raised.
Where do our puppies live?
Our puppies are kept inside of our house so that they are exposed to all the noises, smells, and activity of a normal home. Our puppy room is directly in our main living space and puppies regularly are out and about playing with kids or exploring their surroundings. We fill our puppy room with a variety of stimuli such as tunnels and wobble boards in order to build confidence within the puppies. Our puppies also go outside (weather permitted) and have the opportunity to run through our two and half acres.
Are the puppies house broken?
Puppies begin housebreaking while in our home. We use a litter box to train them and then move them on to potting only outside. Although this is not a 100% guarantee that your puppy will never have an accident, all of our puppy families have found that housebreaking is not difficult with this foundation established.
Do the puppies know commands?
Our puppies do not leave our home obedience trained. This is an opportunity that you as their new owner will have in order to strengthen the relationship between dog and owner. Our puppies are, however, taught a recall whistle which is incredibly reliable.
Are the puppies crate trained?
Puppies are use to sleeping in a crate overnight and to traveling in a crate while in the car. We highly recommend continuing crate training, as both you and your dog will appreciate having this option.
What vet work do the puppies have?
All of our litters have thousands of dollars of vet work put into them. We health test all of our dogs before breeding. Puppies are wormed, receive their first set of vaccinations, and have their eyes certified by the OFA by eight weeks. All puppies leave with a health certificate.

How Do We Place Our Puppies?
We do not place our puppies based on the color of their coat or eyes. Rather we seek to match each puppies' temperament and energy level to the best potential family. We do this through carefully watching the puppies' personalities as they grow and with a temperament test at eight weeks. Occasionally the puppy you put a deposit down on may not be the best fit for you; if this is the case we will either refund you your deposit or offer you a different puppy from the litter.

How much do our puppies cost?
The price for our pet puppies begins at $1,500. For Show/Breed puppies it starts at $2,500. Rosan Kennels reserves the right to ask above or below either our pet or show/breed price for any puppy.
Why do our puppies cost so much?
There are two main reasons we ask so much of our puppies. First, we put in thousands of dollars to every litter. The average cost of vet care pre and post whelping is $1,000. Stud Fees are usually $1,000-$1,500 (many times more). And the cost of a breed quality bitch begins at $1,500. This doesn't include miscellaneous costs such as shipping a bitch to be bred or a c-section when things go wrong. Nor does it include the cost to feed the dam and her pups. When all is said and done, there is often very little profit from a litter.
The second reason behind the cost is that it acts as a contract between you as the buyer and Rosan Kennels. Buying a puppy is a big decision. And Mini Aussies typically live for 12-15 years. The initial cost for a puppy helps us to know that you have thought about adding a puppy to your family and are willing to commit to caring for it.
